GE Wind Energy Arklow Offshore Windfarm

INIS Environmental Consultants Ltd was commissioned to complete an in-depth investigation to identify the mould on the internal towers of wind turbines at a major offshore wind farm and to determine its associated environmental and human-factor risks, if any. This necessitated conducting a range of genetics tests and culturing of fungi to identify the mould down to species level. This process took some months as we had to first isolate DNA before culturing the mould. By identifying the mould in this way we were able to identify the risk and state categorically how to deal with exposure to the mould during a normal working day.

The report produced by INIS Environmental Consultants Ltd detailed the mould’s pathogenicity and clinical significance, occupational exposure limit values, occupational health control measures, potential for biodegradation of the surfaces of the turbine and the approaches which could be employed to control, reduce or remove the potential risks associated with the mould.
